Catalog description

This course introduces the fundamental physical principles governing electronic transport and optical properties of semiconductor materials and devices used in modern electronics and emerging semiconducting technologies. Topics include band structure of materials, carrier scattering by phonons and Coulomb interactions, the Boltzmann Transport Equation, p-n junctions and diodes, MOSFET operation, photovoltaic devices, Schottky contacts, contact resistance in diffusive and ballistic limits, and phonon thermal transport. Examples of low-dimensional materials for electronics and optoelectronics are also discussed. This course is dual listed with EE 554.
