Catalog description
This course introduces the concepts and applications of quantum computing, including the basic principles of quantum information, quantum circuits, and quantum algorithms. Topics include qubits, quantum gates, measurements, pure-state vectors and mixed-state density matrices, linear algebra tools for quantum computation, Bloch-sphere representation, single- and multi-qubit operations, universality of quantum gates, quantum Fourier transform, quantum search algorithms, and selected methods of quantum error correction. The course also provides an overview of physical implementations of quantum computers, including superconducting qubits, ion traps, and photonic integrated circuit qubits. Quantum programs are developed in Python and executed using simulators and IBM quantum computing systems. This course is dual-listed with EE 520.
