Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the ethics of AI (artificial intelligence) with an emphasis on various biases and harms. No prior knowledge of computation or ethics is required but students with these backgrounds are also welcome. Guiding questions in the course include: What are the benefits and harms of AI? How do biases occur in machine learning? How does algorithmic decision making impact practices in criminal justice, healthcare, and social media? How does the study of ethics help us navigate living in data-driven and increasingly automated societies? The beginning of the course will address the basic terminology of AI and ethics, and in the majority of the course, we will discuss how AI applications work in the real world and what kind of ethical difficulties they pose for all of us.
