Catalog description

There is a fee associated with this course. This laboratory-based course is designed to prepare the student for independent laboratory research. The experiments will build on knowledge obtained from sophomore organic chemistry. The curriculum integrates organic synthesis, purification and spectroscopic analysis. Observational skills and record keeping are emphasized. The curriculum includes experiments with the student’s data summarized and analyzed in a formal lab report. The experiments will cover many of the top utilized reactions in modern industrial and academic synthesis including metal-catalyzed and photocatalyzed reactions, multi-step synthesis, polymer and natural product synthesis. Laboratory safety and sustainability principles will be emphasized.
