Current issues in Counseling Psychology

Catalog description

This course is designed to provide an overview of the field of counseling psychology. The course provides information regarding current theoretical approaches to conducting psychotherapy. In this course, students are introduced to some core concepts used in applied psychology such as empathy, understanding content-vs. process and the here-and-now, issues surrounding therapist self-disclosure, existential concerns, and maintaining appropriate boundaries. Students are also given the opportunity to practice some of the basic skills utilized by counselors. These skills include active listening, interviewing, and crisis intervention. The texts and assignments are designed to introduce students to the field of counseling.
