Biomaterials and Immune Response

Catalog description
This course explores the interactions between natural and synthetic materials and the human immune system. Students will examine the structure, properties, and functions of materials used in medical implants, as well as the biological tissues they interact with. The course covers the fundamentals of immune responses to foreign materials, mechanisms of biocompatibility, and the design principles for developing safe and effective biomedical devices. Additional topics include wound healing, inflammation, tissue engineering, and regulatory considerations for clinical translation. Through lectures, discussions, and critical analysis of current research, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate and design materials for medical applications with a focus on host response.
