Spaces of Incarceration

Catalog description

Just as the design of a home says something about its inhabitants and the design of an office building conveys something about the company inside it, the architecture of incarceration spaces, e.g., prisons, expresses the values of society and the justice system. Open to students from all majors, this course provides a historical overview of the design of these spaces, compares various types of incarceration spaces, analyzes current design principles and standards, and speculates on the next generation of prototypes as social attitudes and the justice system evolve.
