Surgical Technology IV

Catalog description

This course examines the pathophysiology, diagnostic interventions, and surgicalinterventions for a variety of surgical specialty procedures. Emphasis is oncardiothoracic, peripheral vascular, EENT, Neuro, orthopedic, genitourinary, andplastic surgical procedures. The course incorporates specialty specificinstrumentation, equipment and supplies required for perioperative casemanagement. Content also includes post-operative care and complications of thesurgical patient. Preparation for the AST certification exam is initiated. Studentswill also be exposed to resume writing, analysis of interview techniques,assessing employment opportunities, comparing the various roles of the surgicaltechnologist and developing an employment strategy. Students will compare andcontrast various applications and follow-up correspondence. Clinical experiencesapply foundational scientific principles, theory, skills and behaviors of surgicaltechnology practice. Students are required to have Basic Life Support (BLS)certification through the American Heart Association. (offered spring semesteronly) (4 hrs. lecture, 12 hrs. clinical) Prerequisite: STC214.
