Surgical Technology I

Catalog description

This course is an orientation to hospital organization, administration, physicalstructure and introduces Surgical Technology as a technical/medical profession.It a comprehensive study of the operative environment, as well as theprofessional roles, communication techniques, legal and ethical responsibilities ofa surgical technologist. Students will discuss the functions of leadership andidentify the characteristics of a successful leader. Lecture topics will includehistorical perspectives of perioperative services and the development of the fieldof Surgical Technology as well as the pathways of advancement to managementroles. Students will develop foundational knowledge and skills related tosterilization, aseptic technique, surgical instruments and supplies and preparationof the sterile field. Laboratory experiences apply foundational scientific principles,theory, skills, and behaviors of surgical technology practice. (offered fall semesteronly) (4 hrs. lecture, 3 hrs. laboratory) Corequisites: HSC110 and STC114.
