This course offers a sociological approach to the study of crime and the criminaljustice system as we examine the social and institutional forces that influencecriminal behavior and its punishment. We examine the social construction ofdeviance and social control as their meanings and methods evolve over time anddiffer across cultures. We use empirical and theoretical approaches to analyzecrime rates, the origins of criminal behavior, public perceptions of crime andcriminals, and inequalities in the prosecution of criminal behavior as it relates togender, race, and social class. Specific topics may include: the war on drugs,terrorism, profiling, restorative justice, and reintegration into society after prison.Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE Social Sciences. Prerequisite: SOC101.
