Catalog description

This course will focus on family with a historical and cross-cultural approach tounderstanding its diverse forms and the functions that families serve forindividuals and society as a whole. Using theoretical perspectives and researchmethods specific to sociology, we examine patterns surrounding mate selection,socialization, marriage, parenting, divorce and remarriage, as well asdysfunctions in the family (e.g., domestic violence). Special attention is given tothe ways that families shape, and are shaped by, gender, race, ethnicity, class,and sexual orientation. Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE Social Sciences. Prerequisite:SOC101.
