Philosophies of Oppression andSocial Justice

Catalog description

Using contemporary thinkers' critical reflections on classic political theories, thecourse will develop the philosophical analysis of concepts of power andoppression, and explore how those concepts operate, both socially andintellectually, in the formation of individual and group identities involving race,class, gender, and sexuality. It will be shown how concepts of rights, equity andfreedom can inform the social justice responses of women, persons of color,different classes, and LGBTQ persons. Required for LAS: Women's and GenderStudies majors. Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE Humanities and SUNY-GE Diversity:Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice. No prerequisite.
