Catalog description

A one-semester survey tracing the historical origins, development, and influenceof major world religions in shaping the contemporary world. The course analyzesthe social, economic, political and cultural conditions that led to the rise of eachreligion and the populations that practice them today, as well as the main beliefsand practices of each faith. Special attention will be paid to cross-culturalinteractions, globalization, and the role of each faith in the modern world as wellas intersections with race, nationality, gender, and diversity. The five majorreligious faiths are covered: Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, andIslam. Additional religions, including Confucianism, Jainism, Shinto, Sikhism,Taoism, Zoroastrianism, native and indigenous faiths, and others may also becovered. Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE World History and Global Awareness andSUNY-GE Social Sciences. Prerequisite: RDG099, ESL012 or equivalent.
