Catalog description

Survey of African American history from 1619 through 1865. Topics include: theTrans Atlantic Slave Trade, slavery, abolition, free Black communities, Blackresistance to slavery, African American involvement in the Revolutionary and CivilWars, African American civic participation, African American contributions to themaking of the United States. African American history will be considered throughgender, disability, and region. Students will study United States politics andSupreme Court cases as related to African American history as well as theconflict of a Constitutional democracy dependent on slavery. Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE U.S. History and Civic Engagement and SUNY-GE Diversity. Prerequisite:RDG099, ESL012 or equivalent.
