This course will include the OASAS required hours specific to Ethics and CulturalCompetence for addiction professionals, including the required child abuse andmaltreatment mandated reporter NYS Education Department approved training.Coursework will include education on, but not limited to, understanding the ethicsand professional responsibilities of the counselor-client relationship, the CASACCanon of Ethical Principles, ethical decision making and conduct, critical thinkingskills, counselor self-disclosure, confidentiality laws and regulations (HIPPA and42CFR part 2), responsibility to seek out and utilize clinical supervision and theimportance of counselor wellness and self-evaluation. The course will alsoaddress counseling special populations/culturalcompetency/diversity/equity/inclusion. It will provide knowledge of the specificsubstance use disorder prevention/treatment needs of particular populations anddevelopment of the skills necessary to effectively counsel individuals in thosepopulations as well as training to develop the ability to understand, communicatewith and effectively interact with people across diverse cultures. (offered springsemester only) Note: Fulfills SUNY-GE Diversity. Prerequisite: ADS230 andADS235 with a C or higher.
