Science Fiction or Inclusive Bioengineering Solutions

Our world is constantly changing with new biomedical technology and innovation driven by history specific problems (e.g., COVID-19), new technology opportunities and discrete events. As scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs/corporate and policy makers work together to make science fiction come to life, it is important to not only understand the technology (TECH) involved but also respect diversity and foster inclusiveness (DIV). Using multimedia (e.g., books, movies and shows), students will explore what science fiction means to us and healthcare in the near future. Students will learn from the TECH and the DIV sides to critically think about what we could do cautiously going forward. We will cover examples including, but not limited to, genetic engineering (cloning, CRISPR-CAS9), bioinformatics, neuroscience, machine learning/AI, tissue engineering, computer-brain interface, bioprinting, augmented reality, wearable health technology and so on. Also, students will learn about how the review and approval process of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), FDA and patent play a crucial role in these issues.
