An exploration of the diversity of intellectual approaches used in archaeology. Topics covered include the extent to which archaeologists consider the field a science; archaeology’s fluctuating relationships with history, geology, and cultural anthropology; and how different schools of archaeological thought evolve from one another. Students will learn about the range of intellectual variation within archaeology, how approaches to the discipline and to the past have developed through time, and the breadth of archaeological practice today.
