Conservation and Indigenous Knowledges

Catalog description

This course examines the relationships, conflicts, and collaborations that emerge between environmental conservation practices and Indigenous peoples, particularly in North America from the late 19th century to today. The class begins by examining histories and politics of national parks and protected areas and ends by exploring how Indigenous knowledges and landscape stewardship practices are reshaping methods of conservation in the face of rapid environmental change. Topics include: national parks, Indigenous protected areas, community-based conservation, co management, traditional ecological knowledge, cultural burning, fisheries management, and food sovereignty.
