Stockton University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course will provide a foundation for understanding the significance of cultural diversity in social interactions and professional social work practice. The course focuses on the social defined concept of "human differences" and how perceptions of those differences affect our values, self-concepts, and personal and professional behaviors. Key concepts of social diversity related to race, ethnicity, gender, religion, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and physical characteristics will be explored within the context of understanding our multicultural society and its connection to the global community. Students will examine the unique social histories, experiences and contributions of diverse groups, and how our attitudes about diversity are manifested in American institutions, social policies and community interactions. Students will be required to address their personal and professional values regarding issues of diversity in order to define a framework for a socially and culturally competent approach to social work practice.
