Catalog description

This is a survey course in U.S. public health administration and law. It begins by describing the history and basic machinery of policymaking and legal process that underpin the individual health care and public health systems, and then turns to an exploration of many of the fundamental problems and contemporary issues in health administration and law. Students will learn to think systematically about these issues and the various methods available to public and private policymakers to solve them. Through readings, case studies and in-class activities, students will explore the ethical and legal dilemmas associated with public health law, administration and policymaking and the inherent tension between individual rights and community health.
