FIELD PLACEMENT IN CHILDHOOD STUDIES

Catalog description

Designed for the Psychology major and the Childhood Studies minor, but open to all majors. Students will not need permission of instructor (POI) to register but will need to meet prerequisites for the course. If students have yet to meet the prerequisites, they should email the course instructor, explaining the situation to see if POIs are warranted to override the prerequisites. Students spend approximately 120 hours at a local agency, hospital, school, or other institution which serves children and/or adolescents. Requires related readings and several class meetings. Positions are arranged with the consultation and approval of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SOBL) Coordinator of Academic Internships and Community Experiences and the course instructor. This is a Service-Learning course that centers on hands-on learning and is one of the capstone courses for the Childhood Studies minor. After upper class students have had considerable course work, it is impactful to solidify the learning in an applied setting. In addition, this course serves as an experiential way for students to investigate career paths in child development and childhood studies, thereby assisting in students’ post-graduation plans.
