PHILOSOPHY EAST AND WEST

Catalog description

Prerequisite: Formerly PHIL 2110; not open to those with credit for PHIL 2110. Not open to freshmen. International/ multicultural subscript (I)This course introduces one or two major themes that Western and Eastern philosophical traditions commonly discuss. The topics will be the idea of human nature, the good life, ethics, environment, and so on. Through close readings of primary texts, students will be encouraged to critically compare and contrast similarities and dissimilarities among these traditions, so that students will acquire and thereby esteem diverse understandings of human beings and the world. Throughout the course, students will learn how to critically analyze difficult philosophical texts and arguments and learn how to ask questions in a philosophical manner. Faculty: J. YI
