Catalog description

This course explores the manner in which philosophical ideas find exemplification in film. The course is organized according to the philosophical topics explored (e.g., morality and responsibility, philosophy of mind, issues with perception, the nature of reality, explorations of time, etc.). We will read primary texts in philosophy and view films as expressions and explorations of the philosophical ideas. We will discuss and critique how well the films are able to convey the content of the ideas, whether the medium of film is adequate to such expression, whether film contributes to or detracts from philosophical understanding. Finally, we will examine the philosophical nature of film itself.
