PHIL 1402
MYSTICISM AND PHILOSOPHY
Stockton University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
The roots of philosophy were nurtured in mystic states such as the feeling of oneness, timelessness, transcendence, and the ineffable. Philosophy seeks reasons for these states and visions, and some philosophical systems approach mystic states when words falter. Texts by Plato (the Phaedrus), tales about Pythagoras, excerpts from Pico della Mirandola, Schelling, Bradley, Russell, Wittgenstein, Marcel, Jaspers, Bataille, and tried and true "mystics" from Eastern and Western traditions will guide and inspire us.
