FOUNDATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING

Catalog description

This foundational course introduces the student to the philosophy of the Nursing Program at Stockton University and the major concepts of professional nursing: person, health, environment and nurse, as well as the major roles in nursing. Systems theory and Roy’s Adaptation Model of Nursing provide the basis upon which to build nursing knowledge in the four spheres of care. Students are introduced to the knowledge, basic skills, attitudes, and concepts in nursing practice across the four spheres of care and include the nursing process, critical thinking, effective communication, quality and safety, legal and ethical principles, social determinants of health, informatics, evidence-based practice, National Patient Safety Goals, client education, culture, and self-care. Beginning competencies in medication administration, aseptic technique, medical terminology, and strategies for client adaptation in basic care and comfort, nutrition and elimination, oxygenation, mobility, hygiene, skin integrity, and psychosocial integrity are assessed in this course.
