THE HOLOCAUST AND THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

Open only to MAHG Graduate Students.This course is a Holocaust (H) elective.This seminar focuses on the ways in which America responded to reports and evidence of the physical annihilation of European Jews in territories under control of the Third Reich. This examination includes the responses of various segments of government and society, including the White House, Department of State, Congress, the media, the Christian churches, civic organizations, and the American Jewish community. The treatment of immigrant groups, such as the Irish, the Chinese, and the Japanese, especially during WWII, who, like Jewish immigrants, experienced nativist restrictions and discrimination will also be examined. Finally, we will consider American responses to the Holocaust since 1945.
