1900-present Course. American Literature Course and 20th-Century Contemporary Literature Course. This course examines American theatre history as a significant part of American cultural history and considers the ways in which theatre has contributed to the construction of an American identity. Representative dramatists from the 19th and 20th centuries and a range of dramatic styles will be covered, with emphasis on modern drama. Emphasis will be given to significant themes, dramatic styles, and reflections on American life and values of individual playwrights.
