SHORT VERSE OF EARLY MODERN BRITAIN

Catalog description

Prerequisite: LITT 2123. Pre-1700 Course and British Literature Course. The bulk of poetry considered in this course dates from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, although some later verse will be considered. Attention will be paid to rhetorical strategies, meter and form, and to the cultures within which the poetry was written and read. Poets will include Skelton, Wyatt, Surrey, Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare, Wroth, Donne, Drayton, Marvell, Philips, Milton, and Herrick, among others. Border ballads and Scots poetry will also be examined. In general the poetry in this course will be short. The challenge will be to make connections and to recognize innovations throughout this rich and meaningful literary tradition. Faculty: T. KINSELLA
