TRADING RACES

Catalog description

1900-present Course, Ethnic/Postcolonial Course, International/Multicultural (I) course. In this course, students will learn about race and ethnicity issues within the United States and the rest of the world through reading a series of texts ranging from Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and Racial Inequality in Contemporary America; Passing; The Invisible Man; The Reluctant Fundamentalist; Orientalism; “White Privilege and Male Privilege” (McIntosh). The class will culminate in a role-playing game called Trading Races where students will play a combination of real historical figures and imaginary multi-ethnic, multi-national Michigan Student assembly members to decide the fate of affirmative action at the University of Michigan in 2003.
