International/multicultural course. (I)Reading and discussion of fiction and literary nonfiction about intercultural travel since the 1950s. We will be looking at how different phases of culture shock such as the "honeymoon" phase, and the adaptation phase are reflected in the texts and how contemporary travel writers grapple with the intercultural complexities of representing character and setting. The readings will include considerable literature in translation, encompassing travels from East to West, South to North, and North to South.Faculty: J. COPELAND
