This interdisciplinary course- history, literature, documentaries, essays, art - studies the impact of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship in Spain from 1939 to 1975 and the country's political transition to democracy after the end of his military regime. Subjects of study and debate will include Franco's biased historiography, the silencing of victims, the pact of oblivion, coming to terms with a heritage of war and collective trauma, the law of historical memory, and the efforts to recover oral histories and testimonies to reconstruct a fragmented and divisive past.
