Prerequisite: Open only to graduate students or by Permission of Instructor.Permission of Instructor required.Oral history is an exciting and important historical method. It has been especially valuable as a tool for understanding the human face of history, whether of soldiers going into battle, of African Americans breaking race barriers during the Civil Rights era, or of scientists working on new technologies. It has been applied to the fields such as the study of community and identity, of social change, and of the history of science and medicine. This course will examine both the theory of oral history, including a range of disciplinary approaches, and the practice, including setting up a community-based oral history project and incorporating oral histories into the high school curriculum.Faculty: L.
