Historical consciousness course (H).This course traces the historical development of definitions of the self, society and empire through the great civilizations of antiquity: Egyptian, early African, Mesopotamian, Israelite, Greek, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic. Issues of social and political history will be examined in light of how these civilizations define the roles of members, marginal members, and non-members in society in relation to issues of trade and empire building.
