Prerequisite: Open to juniors and seniors only. Permission of Instructor required.Historical consciousness course (H).This course will examine the history of confessional groups as they relate to one another and to the Ottoman state. Beginning with Ottoman expansion to the end of the Empire in the 20th century, each group will be examined from the vantage point of being a minority within a predominately "other" society. Using comparative examples such as medieval Spain, Safavid Iran, and cases in early modern Europe, this course will examine questions of identity, legal status, economic role, communal governance, family life, and cultural developments of each group.
