Catalog description

Historical consciousness course (H).This course will cover the emergence of civilization in the Aegean from the Neolithic Period to the end of the Bronze Age. It will examine such famous sites as Troy, Mycenae, and Knossos, and investigate the archaeological techniques of pioneers like Sir Arthur Evans and Heinrich Schliemann. While at its core is a survey of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, it will focus on specific problems and controversies in order to problematize the investigation of the Bronze Age Aegean. This course will not only introduce students to the prehistory of Greece, but also to many of the questions archaeologists ask of pre- and protohistoric material remains and the methods they use to answer them.Faculty: STAFF
