Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor required.Historical consciousness course (H).This course examines the issues of identity, power, and belief in the context of the history of Greek society from the last days of the Byzantine Empire to the present. Considerable attention will be given to the period of Ottoman rule, or Tourkokratia, and the 19th century revolution and nation building project of the Modern Greek state. This course will culminate in an exploration of issues as they relate to the tumultuous 20th century; the population exchange, regional, World and civil wars, the Greek Turkish rivalry, the Cyprus issue, and the European Union.Faculty: T.
