ADVANCED PERSUASIVE WRITING

Catalog description

This is an advanced writing class that focuses on both academic and professional persuasive writing in the social sciences. In this course, we will continue to advance our argumentative and persuasive writing abilities by incorporating our research and critical thinking skills into more complex writing assignments. We will read and analyze various forms of persuasive writings, identifying how the writings meet or fail to meet all parts of the rhetorical triangle. We will gather evidence and respond to these throughout own persuasive writing, which will structure with the Toulmin model as our guide. Various forms of media utilized as rhetorical strategies in formulating arguments will also be studied, analyzed and presented in this class in connection with different types of claims as well as the final research argument paper and oral presentation. Finally, we will study conflict resolution, as we examine the role that persuasive writing plays in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution, including mediation and arbitration proceedings.
