Not open to students who have completed GIS 3640 or GIS 3642.Introductory survey of the origins and historical development of Islam: its essential texts, doctrines, ritual practices, institutions, and movements. Substantial attention will be given to Islam as practiced in specific historical, social, and cultural settings and its role in social organizations, politics, and international relations.
