Catalog description

Though often cast in a negative light the collection of marine and freshwater photosynthetic organisms referred to as pond scum, muck and seaweed is an exceptionally valuable natural resource. From ice cream to calamine, make-up to medicine, paint to porridge, fishkills to filtration, bone grafts to beer, fertilizers to appetizers, and brown tides to biofuels the impacts of pondscum, muck and seaweed can be felt every day. This course will explore the ecological, economical and cultural value of marine and freshwater photosynthetic organisms and their chemical derivatives in human affairs.
