Open only to freshmen.This is a freshman seminar.Values/ethics course (V).What is it to be human, in comparison to animals, especially those that seem very similar to us, such as chimpanzees? What do we mean by "human nature"? Do humans and animals, indeed, have a "nature", or are we creations of our societies and ourselves? Jane Goodall's book, Through a Window and other books, articles, and films will provide possible answers for the class to consider. The class will consist mostly of discussion of assigned readings. There will be a final essay on some aspect of the material we discussed.Faculty: W. CROMARTIE
