DISABILITY IN THE U.S.

Open only to juniors and seniors.This course will focus on the history of psychological, developmental, and acquired physical disabilities in the United States. We will examine pre-disability movement attitudes and the effect of the disability movement on social, economic, and cultural aspects of American life as depicted in popular film, books, and literature. The impact of the IDEA and the Americans with Disabilities Act on social, cultural, and economic rights of all Americans will be explored. The impact of disability on the disabled individual's family, self care, work, leisure, and general role assumption will be discussed.Faculty: K. FURPHY
