Catalog description

"Soul for Sale: Faust," will study examples of the Faust story. In the words of Soren Kierkegaard, "every notable historical era will have its own Faust." More importantly, every individual struggles with their very own Faustian bargain. Readings including examples from the history of literature, Spies, Marlowe, Goethe, Mann, Washington Irving, Pessoa, as well as films from Murnau. Svankmajer, the Coen brothers, and Gillian, along with music by Liszt, Wagner, Busoni, and Berlioz. We will discuss, and extract themes, details, and relations worked on throughout the semester towards a focused analysis and semester-long writing project.
