ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CULTURE

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the language and culture of ancient Egypt. Students will gain a basic knowledge of Middle Egyptian grammar and the hieroglyphic writing system. By the end of the course, students will be able to translate simple inscriptions from Egyptian stele. In conjunction with the language study, the basic elements of Egyptian culture will be reviewed including religion, government, urban and village life, cultural roles of men, women, and children, and economy. Finally, students will apply what they have learned concerning ancient Egyptian language and culture to the analysis of classic ancient Egyptian stories (i.e., Tales of Wonder, Eloquent Peasant, Sinuhe, Shipwrecked Sailor, Man and his Dog, and Setne Khamwas).
