Catalog description

In this course, students will examine selected works from the canon of South African literature by writers of many ethnic backgrounds. These works constitute those written before and after the dismantling of Apartheid and span the period from mid 20th century until the present. In these works the reader sees text as a site of resistance to the cultural domination of the white minority. The works are often marked by sharp contrasts, discordant voices and contradictory points of view, as the artists attempt to make their words speak the lived experience of a majority that resisted oppression. Readings and discussions will increase students' understanding of the country's complex political history and enable them to participate during the course and the accompanying study tour in late May to June.Faculty: L.
