Values/ethics course (V).This course studies the transmission of Greek culture and learning (paideia), and considers the manner in which succeeding empires and civilizations appropriated Greek culture and the classical tradition. This course considers the principles of Hellenism, while focusing on why each succeeding society sought to appropriate aspects of this tradition. Special emphasis will be placed on the creative combination of the "new" and "old" in each instance. Topics include the Ancient Romans, Byzantine Christianity, Arab science and philosophy, Renaissance humanism, Enlightenment classicism, German, French, and English Romanticism, as well as the role of Greek culture and learning in the modern university system.Faculty: T.
