Catalog description
This is a study of reggae music. The course exposes students to some of the philosophical underpinnings of reggae music, to include the teaching of Marcus Garvey, famous artistes like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, connections to the Rastafari movement, and later iterations such as dancehall culture. Students will learn to analyze a wide range of reggae songs, significant concerts, and related media in the context of the political, culture, and artistic traditions of Jamaican history.
