Catalog description

This class will explore the commonalities as well as differences among garden traditions from Babylon to contemporary America, from philosophical, art historical, and literary perspectives. The basic texts are Mara Miller's seminal philosophical study The Garden as an Art and "Gardens", from the Dictionary of the History of Ideas. Other readings will be taken from garden history, art history, philosophy, literature and religion. Documentary and feature films, and, if possible, trips to important regional gardens such as Shofuso in Philadelphia and Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, will also be featured.<br><i>Faculty: M.
