MEXICO: CULTURE AND SOCIETY

Catalog description

This course will look at Mexican culture and society. In particular, it will address the question of how culture and national identity in Mexico have been historically and socially constructed over the past century. We will draw on some of the key works written on Mexico and Mexicans from both sides of the border. Themes to be covered include: The Mesoamerican culture, search for Mexican identity; cultural variations among Mexicans; region, race, and ethnicity in the construction of Mexican culture; gendered views of "Mexicanidad" and urban and rural views of the nation. Students will also ponder the disparate impact of globalization, transnational migration, and trans-culturation on Mexico.
