Who was Jesus of Nazareth? This is one of the most resonant questions in the whole of western religious history. Scholars of the "Third Quest for the Historical Jesus" claim to have a much clearer picture of the world in which Jesus lived, the formation of the Christian gospels, and the link between the two. Yet, no consensus has been reached about who he was, where he fit in the Judaism of his day, and whether any of the claims about him are supported by reliable historical evidence. This course will explore these and other questions through a careful reading of the earliest records "Christian and Jewish, Greek and Roman" of Jesus of Nazareth.
