Catalog description

The past as a treasure, a resource, or as a commodity is being "made public" daily in museums, film, print, computers, and the classroom. This course will critically and constructively examine the dynamics of this representing of the past. The class will debate issues of cultural appropriation, memory, political correctness, and heritage in relation to personal, regional, national, and global pasts. Particular attention will be paid to popular media, audiences, and funding issues. There is an optional service-learning component.
